On May 13 more than 20 Cypriot poets and creative writers from both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities discussed their work with five well known American poets sponsored by the Iowa Writing Program. David St. John of University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Natasha Trethewey of Emory University; Debra Marquart of Iowa State University; Christopher Merrill of University of Iowa; and Jennifer Kwon Dobbs of St. Olaf College described the Iowa Writing Program and listened to well known Cypriot artists describe the inspiration for their poetry. Bright Lights: Clean Energy and Students’ Enthusiasm Shine at Nicosia Vocational High School
Thanks to the hard work of the “Clean Energy Group”, the electronics workshop of a Nicosia vocational high school is now powered by clean, efficient and consistent energy generated by solar and wind power. The “Clean Energy Group”—a group of energetic vocational high school students—proudly explained the results of their work during a presentation on Thursday, May 8, 2008. [more]

Cyprus Celebrates World Press Freedom Day with Journalist Symposium
During May 3-5, 2008, forty-five eminent journalists from both communities in Cyprus as well as from Greece and Turkey attended the third Journalist Symposium held in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss current developments in Cyprus as well as on the role of the media with respect to its power to shape public opinion. Participants also examined recent conflict in Turkey and its consequences for Cyprus and the region. Debate continued during coffee breaks and meals. [more]
