English Language Arts in the Teaching of Content Areas

INSTITUTE OBJECTIVES

 Participants will:

  • Learn approaches and strategies for teaching and assessing language and content
  • Practice integration of language and content in lesson design and curriculum planning.
  • Improve English language skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and visual literacy
  • Experience collaborative learning strategies for implementation in lesson planning
  • Learn about resources for mathematics, science, social studies, and English language and literature
  • Use graphic organizers for effective teaching and learning
  • Integrate visual images to enhance learning and instruction
  • Collaborate with colleagues, share ideas, and present thematic units to enhance language and pedagogical skills

The Instructors

 

Dr. Kaufman teaching at the InstituteDr. Dorit Kaufman is Professor of Linguistics and Director of the Professional Education Program at Stony Brook University, State University of New York. She enjoys teaching and doing research in several areas that include language acquisition and loss among immigrant children, emergent literacy, oral and written narrative development in bilingual children, and teacher education. Her research in teacher education and pedagogy focuses on integrated instruction, the impact of reflective practice, constructivist pedagogy, and interdisciplinary collaboration for professional growth. She has presented and published extensively in these areas and is co-editor of two books in the area of Content-based Instruction. She has taught and learned from hundreds of students and teachers in four continents and is delighted to return to Cyprus to work with teachers and colleagues. In her spare time, she loves to read, to travel, and to meet people.

Dr. Prinz with studentsDr. Patricia Prinz is an ESL consultant working with school districts to help teachers work effectively with English Language Learners. She has worked as an ESL classroom teacher, college faculty, and teacher educator in many countries. She has extensive experience developing teacher education programs as well as teaching and providing professional development in the sociocultural foundations of learning and literary, adolescent literacy development, content-area instruction for second language learners, and teacher supervision and change. Dr. Prinz was the Founding Dean of the School of Education at Southern New Hampshire University and Director of the Boston University Professional Development Project where she conducted research and instructed graduate courses on teaching English language learners in mainstream classes. She lives in rural New Hampshire where she enjoys outdoor activities like gardening, hiking and skiing as well as reading, movies, and traveling. She is excited at the opportunity to collaborate with teachers in Cyprus and looks forward to meeting and learning from new colleagues.
