Embassy Nicosia Organizes Press Conference to Mark
the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 26, 2007

Dr. Juliette Dickstein led a panel of both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot NGOs, who described their efforts (often in cooperation with each other) to combat violence. In recognition of November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Embassy Nicosia organized a press conference at the American Center in Nicosia. The purpose of the event, which was attended by both print and broadcast media, was to highlight the problem and raise awareness within the local community. Bicommunal coordinator Dr. Juliette Dickstein led a panel of representatives from both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot NGOs, who described their efforts (often in cooperation with each other) to combat violence.

While stressing that the two most common forms of abuse were first psychological and then sexual, the organizations also explained how they are working on preventing domestic violence through education, awareness raising, and sensitizing the authorities on the extent of domestic abuse in Cyprus.
