U.S. Fulbright Scholars currently living in Cyprus to conduct research joined with Cypriot alumni of U.S. government-sponsored programs over pizza and philosophy during a meeting of the Socrates Café at the J.W. Fulbright Center on October 21, 2009. These regular get-togethers are funded through the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs to help foster interaction and community spirit among alumni of U.S.-government sponsored programs.

Worldwide, Socrates Cafés are gatherings where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the central theme of Socratizing - the idea that we learn more when we question and question with others. With U.S. Embassy Alumni Coordinator Sondra Sainsbury as the moderator, the amateur philosophers at the café, including Americans, Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, explored the meaning of wisdom and the value of experience. At the end of the evening, the group came to no definitive conclusion, but had the benefit of an enjoyable conversation and a more informed perspective on an age-old issue.
