The USAID-funded Economic Development and Growth for Enterprises (EDGE) project organized a presentation on biodiesel alternatives in Nicosia on January 30, 2008. The presentation, entitled “Business Opportunities for Plant Oil and Biodiesel Production in Cyprus”, attracted over eighty people, a level of interest that was well beyond expectations. Based on initial research of Cyprus’ climate and soil conditions, the speakers discussed the suitability of two plant oil crops for biodiesel production, Jatropha curcas and Jojoba. The speakers then went on to outline global trends in biodiesel production as well as specific business opportunities and conditions for local growers.
Biodiesel is a biodegradable, nontoxic alternative fuel derived from plant oils. Compared to petroleum diesel, biodiesel produces fewer harmful emissions, including fewer of those thought to contribute to global warming. Research has shown that the global biodiesel and plant oil markets are booming, while plant oil resources are still quite limited. The suitability of these plants to Cyprus has recently received significant media and public attention.
Like all U.S. Government programs in Cyprus, EDGE is aimed at facilitating reunification of the island, including through responsible economic growth and sound environmental management.
