Ambassador Klosson dedicated an American Corner at the Eastern Mediterranean University Library on May 23, 2005 in Famagusta along with University Rector Halil Guven, Library Director Osman Soykan, Mr. Oktay Kayalp, U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Craig Kuehl, faculty and students. Ambassador Klosson's opening remarks.

American Corners are part of a larger effort within the State Department to help the world learn more about the U.S. They were first launched in October 2000 at the initiative of the U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Since then, they have become a thriving network; one hundred eighty-five Corners operate around the world and there are over one hundred such corners in Europe alone.

The opening of the corner at EMU was a great opportunity for embassy staff to showcase the Corner's electronic media, book collection and audio/video equipment, but also to describe research, reference and cultural information offered through the Embassy's Information Resource Center and Washington-based State Department websites. Books, DVDs, videos and CD roms on American history, politics, literature, music, culture and geography were provided by a $20,000 gift from the people of the United States of America.

PAS staff have planned and prepared for the opening since 2004, and hope that its placement at the largest university in the north will provide students, researchers and the general public with ample access to resources on the U.S.

In the spirit of opening American Corners worldwide, the Embassy hopes the people of Cyprus will enjoy these corners and invites the public to renew our cross-cultural understanding.
